Hi my name is Stuart and I have been working in the bar/hospitality industry for around 6 years now. I have worked in four star hotels, student filled bars, busy (and i mean busy) city center bars and quiet smaller pubs. In all this time I have worked in a wide variety of bars which if you are wanted to go far in this trade its something i would suggest you do. I currently am part of the management team in a small bar in Leeds working for a large UK pub company (not going to mention which one).
Every bar is different its location, clientele, size and what sort of beers/liqueurs it serves will determine what sort of business it will do. Ill give you a few examples of my experiences working in these different situations:
Busy City Centre Bar
Speed and concentration are the key, to be really good you must be able to remember the orders when lots of people are trying to shout a million and one different drinks at you.
Student Filled Bar
Tend to have music playing whether that's a DJ or live band, paying close attention to what people tell you is the key here because it is very easy to not hear something totally and make entirely the wrong drink which is a waste of alcohol (cardinal sin) and pisses people off generally.
Smaller Pubs
Talking to people works an absolute treat working in a small bar, this is because most of your customers live close by and will be regulars so your ability to take care of these people will make you very popular very fast remember what they drink ask how they are in a nutshell....chat.
Four Star Hotel
Most of the rules i found went out the window no matter how drunk and out of line customers got it still is hard to reprimand people so a great deal of patience for bullshit comes in handy.
Just going to point out this is a really basic outlook on these different kinds of barwork ill need to do a blog on each one to do it justice, so if you want to hear more then you'll want to keep following.
I will leave it there for now and ill post again soon.
